Why You Need a Writing Buddy and Where to Find One

You might think it interesting that a writing coach and book editor is writing a blog post about finding a writing buddy. It isn’t. As a coach and editor, I know that every writer, and editor, needs someone in their corner. Someone they can talk writing with and ask for their opinion.

A writing buddy is perfect because:

  • They can provide valuable feedback.
  • They can act as a sounding board.
  • You can exchange information with them.
  • They may increase your motivation.
  • You can turn to them for emotional support.
  • They can celebrate with you when you meet your writing goals.

Writing buddies can motivate you when you’re ready to give up. They can share a joke or a smile when you really need it. Writing buddies know how you feel because they’ve been where you are.

They know writing is a lonely process. They know what it’s like to feel isolated.

Writing buddies appreciate having someone they can vent to. They appreciate having someone they can talk to when they’re stuck, or when they need someone to keep them on track. They love having someone outside their family appreciate their successes.

So now that you know why you need a writing buddy, where can you find one?

  • Writing buddies can be found in writing groups that meet in bookstores.
  • They can be found online in specific writing communities, like The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
  • Specific writing groups might ask you to bring a sample of your work to the group meeting. There, you’ll receive feedback from other writers in attendance.
  • Writing buddies are found in Facebook writing groups.
  • You can ask for writing buddies on your website when you write a blog entry and post it.
  • You can also ask a writing coach, like me, for help in keeping you motivated and for help with any writing challenges.

You can use your writing buddy as a motivator. They’re great for celebrating your achievements, keeping you on goal, and for brainstorming when you need it.

Now that you know why you need a writing buddy and how to find one, what are you waiting for? Use some of the tips and reasons in this blog post. It might take a little while, but it’s worth the time and energy.

Share your results with me. I’d love to know what you did, what worked, and how long it took to find a writing buddy.
